A bird’s innate ability to fly often evokes a sense of jealousy in me. Swift transitions from land to sky, seamless movements up into the air with swift turns and glides literally above our heads. These movements are enthralling to me.
It is not the mechanics of their ability that interests me, however, it is the transition from one stance to another. Sometimes they are found casually fluttering around a tree branch or, in the case of ducks, coasting on a pond, or waddling in a flock on the ground. In “private clubs” ducks often gather in various “hot spots” for temporary social clucking meetings. The interpretation, for the average human, is a flock of loud and noisy birds making an unnecessary fuss! The moment when birds transport themselves into the air, however, this creature transforms into an object of delightful beauty. Skillfully gliding and whirling in the air up above, through and around us. My jealous gaze often changes to one of hope and promise when I begin to regard their motions as a metaphor. A metaphor for the abilities and potential with me, within us! In a supernatural God initiated relationship, hope, faith, belief and trust are explored. Hope is tested and tried when we continue to trust in the midst of difficult circumstances. Like an athlete strengthens and pushes their bodies and will, the Lord often pushes our faith to limits we cannot fathom. Today, I watched mostly pairs and small groups of people, encouraging and pushing each other to go beyond their limit in exercise at a local park. Two women and a young boy used the bench I was sitting on to perform various jumps and thrusts. All the time, through every motion, they encouraged each other. “Those who trust in their own sufficiency, and are so confident of it they neither exert themselves to the utmost nor seek God for his grace…think of themselves stronger than they are….They shall soon see folly of trusting to themselves.” (Mathew Henry, Commentary). Encouragement, sometimes comes through the support of another person. I thank God for His Holy Spirit that “speaks” to our hearts and minds, coaching us through the processes of life. We can fly! in our mind and spirit. We can push forward in our endeavors knowing that God is with us. God won’t let us fall.

This reflection really spoke to me as I'm in a period where my hope is being severely tested. Holy Spirit is saying "continue to hope and keep walking in the way set before you". I'm reminding myself that the process is as important as the destiny and therefore looking for the lessons to be learnt and the encounters to value. Another poetic, powerful and insightful reflection Annette.

Thank you for the reminder that the process is as important as the destiny. Yes, I believe there is a great work and reward for those who press through in faith.
